Safety precautions for cryogenic storage tanks

By Manager
Date: Apr 27, 2021
1. Wear protective equipment such as coarse cloth gloves when operating cryogenic storage tanks to prevent frostbite caused by cryogenic liquids.

2. The cryogenic storage tank is a pressure vessel. The operator must undergo safety training, be familiar with the structure of the cryogenic storage tank and the characteristics of the cryogenic liquid, and master the explosion-proof technology and fire safety regulations.

3. The operator should be familiar with the process flow of the pressure vessel equipment, the functions and operating procedures of the various valves and instruments of the cryogenic storage tank, safety accessories, and the filling and draining operations should be carried out in strict accordance with the operating procedures.

4. In the use of cryogenic storage tanks, always check whether the valve is in the correct opening and closing position, whether the pressure gauge and level gauge are accurate and reliable, and whether the equipment pipelines and valves are leaking and clogging. When the pressure of the container reaches the lift-off pressure of the safety valve and the safety valve does not move, the pressure of the safety valve should be calibrated immediately to ensure the safety of the cryogenic storage tank.

5. The opening and closing of all valves should be slow to prevent excessive force from damaging the valves. When the valve is frozen and cannot be opened or closed, use hot air or hot water to heat and thaw. It is strictly forbidden to use hard objects to beat, fire or heat.
6. When the storage medium is liquid oxygen, because oxygen is a strong combustion-supporting gas, the tank must be degreasing treatment. It is strictly forbidden to use greased tools, protective equipment and steel tools that are prone to sparks when hitting, and should use grease-free rubber or brass tools.

7. If abnormal pressure rise in the storage tank is found, the gas vent valve should be opened immediately, and the cause should be found out to prevent accidents caused by overpressure.

8. When it is out of service for a short time, do not empty all the liquid in the cryogenic storage tank. Keep 5%-10% of the liquid volume according to the length of the interrupted use time to reduce the evaporation loss when refilling.

9. After the liquid in the cryogenic storage tank is emptied, the pressure in the storage tank should be maintained at 0.02MPa to prevent humid air from entering the pipeline system and causing blockage of the pipeline valve.

10. When operating, pay attention to whether there is "sweating" on the outer surface of the cryogenic storage tank. If "sweating" is found, stop using it and find out the cause.

11. The filling rate of cryogenic storage tanks shall not be greater than 0.95 to prevent safety accidents caused by a sudden pressure rise when the gas phase volume in the tank is too small.
